The Writers’ College Short Story Competition is open for submissions.

Submission Guidelines

  • Theme: All the things we didn’t learn
  • Open to unpublished writers or those with fewer than four publications, from any country
  • Only one story per entrant.
  • Entries must be written in English.
  • Stories must be original and unpublished (including online).
  • Max. 2,000 words
  • All genres are welcome (literary, horror, sci-fi, fantasy, speculative fiction). Note: literary fiction tends to perform best

Judges: Tania Hutley, Sonny Whitelaw, Alex Smith & Lorraine Forest-Turner

Entry fee: £8

Prizes:

  • First prize: $1,000
  • Second prize: $500
  • Third prize: $250

Deadline: 30th September, 2025

Key dates: Longlist announced on 31st October and winners announced on 15th November.
