How to Find the Right Writing Course for You

It’s a big world, and there are plenty of different ways to learn how to write. From online courses to local workshops, the options are endless. But how do you choose which one is right for you? In this article, I’ll examine some factors you should consider before signing up for any writing course.

Find a course that fits your schedule.

Life is busy, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your passion. That being said, it’s imperative to find a course that fits your schedule to prevent any obstacles. If you work full-time and have kids, taking classes during the week or in person might be challenging. Online classes like those provided by Creative Writing NZ might be the perfect option. Whatever your situation, however, make sure the class time works for you before signing up.

Choose a school that has a good reputation.

Always check out the school’s website and social media pages. If you've never heard of it before or don't know much about them, then it will be worth your time to do your research. Look for testimonials from past students on their websites or other review sites to get an idea of the experience people had at each institution and whether or not their learning goals were met (and how quickly). You want to ensure your expectations
are met and that you are finding the right fit for you and your specific writing goals.

Consider the instructors and their experience.

So you’ve found the writing school for you and decided what writing course you want to take? Perfect, now it's time to look at the instructors. There are two main things to consider: their reputation and their experience.

  • Reputation: Does this instructor have good reviews and a student success rate? Do they offer good advice on writing in general or just specific genres? Utilize testimonials and review sites to see what others have said, and even reach out to the school to ask some of these particular questions to help you narrow down if the instructor is the best fit for you.
  • Experience: How much experience do they have teaching at this school and teaching classes like yours in particular? Even if an instructor has been working with students for years, they may not know precisely what kind of feedback works best for each student. They may be better suited to advanced students when you are a beginner. Same as above, check testimonials and incorporate these questions into anything you ask the school when deciding.
