Our beginners courses are in huge demand and are filling up very quickly, so we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.

Week 1: Ideas and Inspiration

Where do ideas come from? Module 1 looks at how you can take inspiration from a wide range of sources from all around you, and turn them into material for your stories.

Week 2: Bringing Your Characters to Life

If you’re writing fiction, it’s vital to create believable characters. This module will show you how to do this using a variety of different exercises to spark ideas and build a character from scratch.

Week 3: Voice, Viewpoint and Dialogue

Now you’ve created a character, it’s time to think about your writer’s voice, point of view and dialogue. This week you’ll be looking at what ‘voice’ actually is, how the point of view you choose affects the story you’re trying to tell, and the importance of writing strong dialogue.

Week 4: World Building and Settings

Fully-realised settings are important too, whether your story is set in another world or in the corner shop! In this module you’ll look at ways to create vivid settings, and how to place your characters there.

Week 5: Pin Your Plot Down

We’ve all heard the saying “every story should have a beginning, middle and end”, but what does that actually mean? This week you’ll be studying the basics of story structure, using existing stories as examples, have a go at plotting out your own beginning, middle and end and writing an opening that hooks your reader in.

Week 6: Getting Stuck, and Getting On

This module looks at everything else: exercises to help beat the dreaded writer’s block, tips for redrafting and editing your work, and what to do next – whether that’s pursue publication, enter competitions or start writing your novel!
