48-Hour Writing Competition Open Category

  • Esteemed writer Owen Marshall will judge the Open Category.
  • The winner receives $500 and their piece will be published in 1964: Mountain Culture / Aotearoa journal.
  • Writing prompts for the Open Category will be released at 5 pm on Friday, 31 October

The Tamariki (Years 1-8) and Rangatahi (Years 9-13) writing competition opens on 1 September 

Submission Guidelines

  • Entries will not have been published elsewhere.
  • The submission must be the original work of the writer submitting it.
  • Writers must be resident in the Otago or Southland regions.
  • Rangatahi category is open to young people in Years 9 – 13.
  • Tamariki category is open to young people in Years 1 – 8.

Judge: Rachael King

Entry fee: Free to enter

Prizes:

Tamariki (Years 1 – 8)

  • Winner receives a cash prize of $150 and a $50 book voucher.
  • Four highly commended pieces receive a $50 book voucher.

Rangatahi (Years 9 – 13)

  • Winner receives a cash prize of $200 and a $100 book voucher.
  • Second place receives a cash prize of $100 and a $50 book voucher.
  • Third place receives a $50 book voucher.

Deadline: Entries are due by 5 pm on Friday, October 10th.
