This online creative writing course for children is for 7-12 year old students. The student doesn’t have to be online at a set day or time, so the course will fit into the student’s schedule.
There are six modules over the course of six weeks. The student will receive weekly notes, tips and assignments to help them. The tutor will read each assignment and the student will receive written feedback on the assignments.
The tutor will email you on the course start date with your first module; please check your Spam/Junk folder for this email.
Week One: ‘The Lightbulb Moment’ – Ideas and Inspiration
In our first session, you’ll be discovering what it takes to transform that dreaded blank page into oodles of ideas, which are desperate to be in your next story. You’ll learn some tips and tricks on how to actively acquire inspiration from just about anywhere.
Week Two: ‘Where in the World…?’ – Setting
Week two will focus on surroundings. You’ll see how setting can completely alter the mood of your writing and how, by using the five senses, you can turn a dirty rubbish tip into an island of excitement and adventure. You will also have a go at creating your very own world.
Week Three: ‘Who’s Who?’ – Characters
In week three of the online creative writing course for children, you will learn how to create a character from scratch, bring it to life and love it like a best friend. You’ll also look at drawing inspiration from your own experiences to create authentic, multi-dimensional characters.
Week Four: ‘They Said What?!’ – Point of View and Dialogue
During week four, we’ll focus on the writer’s point of view and how it can affect the way a story is told. You’ll also discover different character perspectives and understand how to interweave engaging dialogue into a narrative.
Week Five: ‘Lights, Camera… ACTION’ – Plot and Structure
Week five will centre on the importance of structuring and planning a story – think beginning, middle, end. We’ll draw on examples of existing plotlines to help you understand how to build up to an exciting climax using action and conflict.
Week Six: ‘All Tied up with a Bow’
You’ll end your journey by comprising everything you’ve learnt over the past six weeks into a short story. You’ll then learn how to edit and redraft your work, with advice on how to look at your writing objectively.
