This online creative writing course for children is for 7-12 year old students. The student doesn’t have to be online at a set day or time, so the course will fit into the student’s schedule.
There are six modules over the course of six weeks. The student will receive weekly notes, tips and assignments to help them. The tutor will read each assignment and the student will receive written feedback on the assignments.
The tutor will email you on the course start date with your first module; please check your Spam/Junk folder for this email.
Week One: So, Seriously – Storytelling?
Let’s begin with an introduction to stories – why do we tell them, have we always told them, and where can we find them? Here’s a hint: they are all around us!
In this module we will discover tales from the Stone Age and narratives hidden within videogames. We’ll also explore what stories might look like in the future.
Week Two: Inspiration and Ideas
In week two, we will look at where ideas come from and how we can find them.
During this session you will uncover some techniques that can make ideas flow from your creative mind, even if you think there is nothing there! We will then learn how to grow those ideas and build on them to create a story.
Week Three: Creating Characters
In this module, you will learn how to craft characters that feel like real, authentic people who are just right for your story.
We will ask these characters what they want and who is stopping them from getting it? Then, we will give them something to do – whatever that may be, is up to you!
Week Four: Wonderful Worlds
Have you ever wanted to invent a whole new place – maybe somewhere ordinary, or even out-of-this-world? Now is your chance.
In week four, we’ll discover different environments, how to describe them, and how to make them feel real – even if they are utterly incredible! Then, we’ll look at how your character fits in the new world that you’ve created.
Week Five: Solid Structures
This week, we will begin to discover how to construct a plot for your story.
We’ll explore ‘acts’ as an interesting way to chop a story into easy chunks that we can work with and develop. You will also explore how to think of a story as an adventurous mountain to climb.
Week Six: Prose, Plays, Poems, and Pictures
We’ll finish the course by looking at how to combine all of the modules into your preferred form of storytelling, be it narrative, script, poetry, or graphic novel/comic.
You’ll also begin to think about what kind of writing craft techniques you will need to perfect your dialogue and presentation.
